Field note
Writing Board Packs After Exception Work
An audit committee does not need every voucher photocopy. It needs a clear statement of what was tested, what failed, what remains unresolved, and what management intends to do. Length is not credibility.
Lead with scope and limitations: periods, entities, access denied, and samples chosen. Then present exception results in a table the committee can scan—population, tested, failed, cleared, open. Attach one or two anonymized examples that show the nature of a fail without turning the pack into a novel.
Separate known error from suspected irregularity. Committees act differently when a control is weak versus when diversion is plausible. Say which standard of evidence you used and where counsel should be looped in.
Close with owners and dates, not slogans. A remediation schedule with names is more useful than a promise to “strengthen the control environment.” If retesting is planned, say when and by whom.
